Watch the Rescue!

In the late summer of 2010, CRCS Disaster Kleenup of Oshawa, Ontario, came to the rescue of a giant Winne The Pooh stuffed bear. Former General Manager, William Edwards had CityTV's Breakfast Television morning show on in the background as he prepared to head off to work, But the broadcast commanded his full attention when it featured footage of a huge, stuffed bear lying face down in the mud under Toronto's Gardiner Expressway. Later the same day, CRCS picked up the abandoned Pooh and set about restoring him to his lovable and sanitary condition. They used a brushing application to break up and loosen the dirt, and then started using a HEPA vacuum. After determining that his stuffing was unsalvageable, the CRCS team decided to restore the bear's furry nylon skin and restuff it. 'Permanent' marker scrawlings on Winnie were eradicated, and the CRCS technicians then laundered the skin in their Esporta washing machine that the company has used on everything from sports equipment to property damaged by sewage, mould and smoke. "Before we put the shell of Winnie into the Esporta we did a swab test for a bacteria count, and the count was high," says CRCS water loss mitigation manager Ryan Douglas. After laundering, it passed the bacteria test with flying colours. "The bear came out looking pristine, and then we went through the process of refilling it," says Mr. Edwards. A "Stitch It" store in Oshawa pitched in and fabricated a replacement bear-size shirt. Within two days the restoration was complete. The bear and his rescuers made an appearance on Breakfast Television; the show's producers then donated the bear to a Winnie-collecting viewer. Since then, CRCS has received business from adjusters who saw the televised segment, and the company was honoured when the mayors of Durham Region asked to post the Breakfast Television clip of this unusual rescue mission on their websites.
